Celebrating 100 years of Rabindra Nath Tagore’s receiving the Nobel prize for Literature


The seminar on the ‘Creating & Teaching Music Patterns’ will focus on the underlying process of creation of Musical Patterns that create musical impact on human minds. A musical pattern can be viewed as musical motifs where some chosen-part or chosen-parts  of a musical phrase get repeated leading to elaboration of musical expressions. This  can be also viewed as templates that is developed by substituting, subtracting  or adding musical  elements. Different applications of this phenomenon can be observed in different cultures, music styles within a culture, a musician representing a style, a set of performances, a set of musical compositions, the changes over time and so on. Analysis through different study approaches help to understand the phenomena in greater details.

This interesting area of inquiry raises many questions. What makes a musical pattern stand out? How the composers and musicians have been working since ancient times? How the process is taught? Indian musicians continuously go on creating musical patterns on spot and present enjoyable music. Indian improvisations follow some traditionally laid down methods combined with ‘artistic logic’. How the whole process may be analyzed?

This seminar is expected to unfold the interlinks between the musical content, process, inspiration factors, creation methods those are adapted in different music genres and sub-genres. This is an effort to understand the process that is going on for ages in different cultures around the world.

We hope that the seminar will be able to successfully generate substantial information that will help to open up  the music from new perspectives. We look forward for the participation of scholars in different branches of knowledge including physics, statistics, mathematics, computer science, anthropology, history, ethnomusicology, sociology, literature, education and other relevant disciplines.
